Many different factors internal or external to the person (or plant or animal) can cause disease. Examples of internal factors are genetic defects or nutritional deficiencies. In the environmental impact, such as passive smoking is an example of an external factor. Many diseases are the result of a combination of internal and external factors. For many diseases, not cause or set of causes has been identified. There are many different factors that can cause disease. They can generally be divided into categories such as social, psychological, chemical and biological. Several factors may enter more than one category.
